This original volume juxtaposes the work of two artists: the South African-born, Netherlands-based painter Marlene Dumas (b. 1953) and the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944). Organized by Dumas, the project stems from her longstanding, personal connection to the works of Munch. The book focuses particularly on Munch's 1908-9 series of lithographs titled Alpha and Omega and on a new series of works by Dumas titled Venus & Adonis. Both series deal with themes of innocence, sexuality, loneliness, anxiety, and death, and each is structured around a love story. Through this book, Dumas shows us how she perceives Munch not simply as an emotional expressionist, but rather as an intelligent artist thoughtfully reflecting on human conditions in general.

'Piet Mondriaan - Schrijven over kunst' gaat over de onbekende kant van deze bekende kunstenaar. Want wat velen niet weten, is dat Mondriaan (1872-1944) niet alleen als schilder, maar ook als schrijver zeer productief is geweest. In een periode van dertig jaar heeft hij ruim honderd Nederlandse, Franse en Engelse teksten geschreven. Dit boek bespreekt niet alle teksten van Mondriaan, maar biedt een representatieve steekproef.

De jonge Belgische kunstenaar Ben Sledsens (°1991) is nog maar net aan een carrière in de beeldende kunst begonnen, maar hij wordt al omarmd door de kunstwereld. Op zijn grote canvassen vertaalt hij de klassieke genres van de schilderkunst - het portret, het stilleven, het interieur, het landschap - naar de beeldtaal van zijn eigen rijke universum. Hij verknipt het alledaagse leven en zet de ervarinƯgen naar zijn hand. Het resultaat lijken momentopnames van het gewone, dat toch telkens bijzonder en poëtisch aanvoelt. De invloed van grootmeesters als Matisse, Rousseau en Bruegel is in zijn kleine utopieën niet ver weg. Geïnspireerd door de natuur ontstaan de werken van Sledsens organisch. Geen strakke lijnen of vooropgezette schema's, maar wel een natuurlijk vloeiende weerspiegeling van zijn gedachten van het moment. De eenvoud van zijn onderwerpen maakt de beelden net erg vatbaar voor interpretatie. De kijker vult zelf het narratief aan dat nog alle kanten uit kan. Sledsens' doeken zijn letterlijk groot genoeg om erin te kunnen stappen en nodigen uit om er in gedachten in te verdwijnen. De werken van Sledsens zijn steeds subtiel met elkaar verbonden, bij-voorbeeld door weerkerende objecten. In het beëindigen van één werk ligt reeds de kiem van een ander. Op die manier vormt zijn prille oeuvre als het ware één groot verhaal. Exhibition: Tim Van Laere Gallery, Antwerp, Belgium (06.09. - 20.10.2018).

While a young student in Chicago, Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) regularly haunted the corridors of the Art Institute in order to learn `what painting was'. She later moved to New York, and met the art dealer, Julien Levy, who introduced her to surrealist refugees who had fled from occupied Europe, including her future husband Max Ernst. Tanning and Ernst settled first in Sedona, Arizona,where she created enigmatic paintings of life on the inside, looking out (including Tate's own Eine Kleine Nachtmusik from 1943). The couple transferred to Paris in 1956, a move which marked the beginning of Tanning's intense adventure in soft sculpture, featuring fleshy, figure-like protruberances captured in textured fabrics (such as the remarkable installation Chambre 202, Hotel du Pavot or Tate's Nue couchee 1969-70). Tanning returned to the USA after Ernst's death in 1976 and, while continuing to paint, she also began to write poetry and fiction (her published works include two memoirs, Birthday and Between Lives, two collections of poems Coming to That and A Table of Content, and a novel, Chasm). Dorothea Tanning died at her home in New York City on January 31, 2012. She was 101 years old. There is little in print detailing Tanning's entire career, and still less that is well illustrated. This book will be a beautiful introduction to the work of a remarkable and fascinating artist. It will include an overview of the artist's life and career written by Alyce Mahon; Ann Coxon will write on theme of the home and domestic in Tanning's art and examine the overlap with the several contemporary women artists; Idoia Murga Castro will explore the significance of dance and stage in tanning's work, with particular relevance to the drama of the 1940s and 50s; and Mahon will also write on Tanning's sculptural output. The texts and plates are to be punctuated by extracts from Tanning's diaries, selected by the curators and the Pamela Johnson, Executive Director of the Dorothea Tanning Foundation in New York.

In 2015 startte Sam Dillemans een reeks werken rond de Groote Oorlog. In overwegend witte en zwarte olieverf zet hij aangrijpende oorlogstaferelen neer. Het resultaat is een nieuw, indrukwekkend en woest universum waarin (on)menselijk leed trefzeker wordt gevat in beelden van ongetemde schoonheid. Eén werk uit de reeks, 'Ypres', werd aan de stad Ieper geschonken n.a.v. de 100ste verjaardag van de Derde Slag bij Ieper. In het voorjaar van 2018 belicht een grote overzichtstentoonstelling in de Tentoonstellingsruimte Sam Dillemans dit nieuwe hoofdstuk uit zijn oeuvre.
